Turmeric has been used historically as a component of Ayurvedic medicine to treat wide variety of ailments. According to Ayurvedic texts this wonder spice helps in detoxification of the liver, balance cholesterol levels, fight allergies, stimulate digestion, boost immunity and enhance the complexion. The curcuminoids are responsible for the yellow colour of turmeric. Curcumin is the main curcuminoid found in Turmeric. Studies suggest that Curcumin has antitumor, antioxidant, antiarthritic, antiamyloid, anti-ischemic and anti- inflammatory properties. Curcumin has been demonstrated to have positive effect on high impact exercise and learning. Curcumin induces apoptosis in cancer cells. A recent study on Curcumin effects on cancer states that it modulates growth of tumor cells through regulation of multiple cell signalling pathways and can act as potential anticancer agent.
